HS: State, Region rankings, Nov. 7
The nation's longest run of consecutive state titles came to an end last Thursday, foreshadowing a weekend of full of playoff surprises that alters this week's state and region rankings.
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) lost to Pennington School (Pennington, N.J.) in the Prep A boys final last week, ending a run of state titles at 27 for the New jersey powerhouse. Meanwhile, the victory helped Pennington complete an undefeated season and with it a jump in this week's state and region rankings.
Here are a few other highlights from last week:
BOYS
West Chester Henderson (West Chester, Pa.) upended former SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 Conestoga (Berwyn, Pa.) last week in the district final to jump to the top of the state and region rankings. The teams have split their contests this season and both begind state playoff action this week with a chance at a third meeting. ... Naperville North (Naperville, Ill.) and Barrington (Cicero, Ill.) met in what amounted to a state quarterfinal match last week and it was expected that the winner would ultimately be the state champ. Such was the case. Naperville North toppled then state and region No. 1 Morton, then went on to claim the illinois 3A crown. ... Dodge City (Kan.) delivered a suprise in Kansas, capping a perfect season with a victory over favored Olathe East (Olathe, Kan.) in the 6A final. Dodge City's accomplishment marks a rare soccer state title for the western part of the Kansas. ... Stillwater (Minn.) completed a perfect 22-0 season with a convincing Class AA state title in Minnesota, which will lead to the highest-ever SIMA FAB 50 finish for a Minnesota school.
GIRLS
There was only one change among region No. 1 in girls soccer, and it occured in Ohio. Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) returns to the top spot as Nos. 1 and 2 swapped places after Walsh's victory over Strongsville (Ohio). ... On the state level, West Jessamine (Nicholasville, Ky.), Camden Hills (Rockport, Maine), Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.), Centennial (Circle Pines, Minn.), Pinkerton Academy (Derry, N.H.), Cibola (Albuquerque, N.M.), [Burr & Burton vt-w] (Manchester, Vt.) and Winfield (W.Va.) secured state No. 1 rankings with weekend titles.
