HS: Winter region, state rankings, Dec. 1
Nearly a month has gone by since the SIMA FAB 50 winter preseason boys and girls rankings were released, and entering December, there's little change.
The major reason, of course, play has yet to start for public schools in California and Texas, the two states that dominate the boys and girls winter FAB 50s. In fact, 39 girls teams and 33 boys teams in the preseason FAB 50s hail from either California or Texas.
Today starts the first of the weekly rankings updates. The state and region rankings will be released each Monday during the winter season, with the SIMA FAB 50 released each Tuesday. [With one exception — a week off around Christmas.]
While there's no change in the Arizona boys and girls, California boys and girls, Hawaii boys and girls and Texas boys rankings, there is plenty of movement in the other winter-playing states.
The most noteworthy moves are in Florida where Chiles (Tallahassee, Fla.) boys and Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) girls made the greatest strides.
This past weekend, Chiles went 3-0 at the Jacksonville Thanksgiving Tournament, which included a win over Fleming Island (Fleming Island, Fla.), which had tied Louisnana's defending state champion St. Paul's (Covington, La.). Senior forward Ian Hildebrandt has a team-high 12 goals and senior forward James Gillard has nine goals and seven assists as Chiles is off to an 11-0 start. Chiles moves from No. 9 in the Florida-North Region to No. 3 this week, which will result in a SIMA FAB 50 ranking on Tuesday.
Douglas, which welcomes back highly success coach Laura Rountree, also is off an 11-0 start, moving into the No. 3 spot in the Florida-South Region girls rankings. Rountree coached Douglas to a FAB 50 No. 1 title during the 2002-03 season, when the program drew heavily from then powerhouse club team Renegades.
