HS: Winter region, state rankings, Feb. 23
Although the ball is round and the field is flat, soccer is full of crazy bounces -- perhap none more bizarre than the final touch in Hawaii girls soccer this season.
Mililani (Mililani, Hawaii) junior Kasey Isobe launched a seemingly harmless long ball from midfield, well ahead of her team's attacking players with less than three minutes left in the second overtime session against [Iolani School hi-w] (Honolulu, Hawaii). The Iolani keeper came out to gather the ball on the first hop, but instead it bounced over her head and rolled into the left corner of the goal, giving Mililani a 1-0 Division I state title win. The score was Isobe's first -- and only -- this season and delivered the Trojans' their first crown since 2002.
Crazy bounces were all around this week, as a pair of California boys postseason favorites made first-round playoff exits in the Southern Section Division I playoffs; two California-North girls favorites were bounced in the North Coast Section quarterfinals; and a key tie in Texas led to a swap of the No. 1 and 2 teams in that state.
