HS: Winter region, state rankings, Jan. 26
In the battle of Los Angeles boys soccer powers, Round 1 goes to Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Cathedral handed Salesian (Los Angeles, Calif.) its first setback of the season in a 2-1 contest. The teams will meet again in league play next month. While Cathedral entered the week ranked No. 2 in Southern California and No. 3 in the state, the victory allowed the Phantoms to inch a spot higher in this week's state rankings. Salesian, meanwhile, does not fall far -- just a spot, down to No. 5 in Southern California and No. 6 in the state.
The only regional No. 1 changes for boys took place in Texas-North and the West. Sam Houston (Arlington, Texas) takes the top spot in a closely contested Texas-North area, which features five teams ranked among the SIMA FAB 50 Top 10. The first instate loss by Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) allows defending state champion Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) to take the top spot in the West.
Other highlights:
BOYS
Flower Mound (Flower Mound, Texas) and McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) played to a 2-2 draw last week, an outcome that slightly altered the top of the Texas-North rankings. Flower Mound settles in at No. 3, just ahead of Boyd; but behind Sam Houston and Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, Texas). Sam Houston beat Boyd and tied Heritage. The top three teams remain undefeated although they have collected seven ties among them.
In California, El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) moved up to No. 8 in the Southern California rankings thanks to a win over SIMA FAB 50-ranked San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.).
GIRLS
La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) defeated Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) last week, allowing LCC to move to No. 2 in the Southern California rankings behind new No. 1 Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) as former region No. 1 Cathedral Catholic fell to No. 3. In NorCal, the match that was expected to settle the No. 1 ranking in San Jose ended up in a tie between Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) and St. Francis (Mountain View, Calif.). That result leaves these teams side by side in the California-North Top 10, the state and SIMA FAB 50 rankings this week.
