HS: Winter state, region rankings, Dec. 25
Forest fires in California this month have led to school closures and canceled events.
But one team, the Santa Barbara (Calif.) boys, was able to put the troubles behind them to win the South Torrance Tournament, highlighting last week's national high school action.
Santa Barbara had gone nearly two weeks without a game or practice as the Thomas Fire shut down activity in the area. The Dons, however traveled to South Torrance where it ran the table -- beating FAB 50-ranked Fremont (Calif.) in a shootout in the semifinals and FAB 50-ranked Loyola 2-1 in the final on a last-minute goal.
In other major tournament news last week, Monte Vista (Calif.) went 2-0-1 in the mixer format at the 15th Annual Tri-Valley Classic in Danville, Calif. The event featured three FAB 50 teams. Monte Vista's big victory was a 1-0 result over previously undefeated Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) in the opening contest.
Overall, it was a slow week of high school action as Texas has yet to start play and most Florida teams already are on holiday break, as where a number of top California programs.
