HS: Winter state, region rankings, Feb. 5
In a week were there were no changes at No. 1 in any state ranking and 14 of 16 region No. 1s held their spot, there was still plenty of movement.
Looking at the No. 1s, the only changes occurred in the California-North and Texas-South boys regions where the No. 1 and 2 teams flipped positions. St. Ignatius (San Francisco, Calif.) and North Shore (Houston, Texas) boys move to the top, pushing down to No. 2 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) and Alief Elsik (Houston, Texas).
This week's biggest shakeup takes place in Florida, where the district playoffs did not play out as expected for a number of top boys teams. Fleming Island (Fla.), which spent most of the season in or near the FAB 50 Top 10, was ousted by Oakleaf (Orange Park, Fla.) in the district semifinals, preventing the defending state champions from reaching the regional playoffs. Former undefeated Fletcher (Jacksonville, Fla.) lost in the district final, but gets a second chance as both the district champion and runner-up advance in Florida's postseason system. Safe to say down, but not out. Freedom (Orlando, Fla.), Doral Academy (Fla.) and Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) were a combined 43-3-6 entering last week, and all three were eliminated before the district final.
This week, Florida starts regional postseason play for boys and girls teams, Arizona and Hawaii will crown state champions and Mississippi and Louisiana will play down to the state semifinal rounds.
