HS: Winter state, region rankings, Jan. 11
Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) girls backed its national No. 1 ranking, winning four matches in 52 hours at the National Elite Prep Showcase. Meanwhile, several of the top Texas boys teams played to ties as the final group of winter-playing schools got their regular season starts last week.
Here's a look at some of the week's big winners:
BOYS
Palo Alto (Palo Alto, Calif.) upended Homestead (Cupertino, Calif.) to vault to No. 1 in the California-North rankings. Undefeated Palo Alto has a victory over region No. 2 Homestead, which beat region No. 3 Watsonville (Watsonville, Calif.).
Coppell (Coppell, Texas) inches higher after playing to a 1-1 draw with Sam Houston (Arlington, Texas) in the final round of the North Texas Elite Showcase. Wakeland (Frisco, Texas) and Hebron (Hebron, Texas), and Cinco Ranch (Katy, Texas) and Stony Point (Round Rock, Texas) also played to ties in their matches, leaving the top seven ranked teams in Texas all at 2-0-1.
GIRLS
For one of the first times ever, the California schools competing at the National Elite Prep Showcase in Texas found winning a difficult task.
Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), [Liberty ca-w] (Brentwood, Calif.) and Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) -- three highly ranked programs in California -- combined to go 4-7-1. While those results do not alter the California order since the matches were against out-of-state teams, it does put into perspective where California stands relative to the top Texas teams this season.
The Flower Mound schools -- Flower Mound and Marcus -- combined to go 7-0 at NEPS. For Marcus, it means a jump to No. 2 in the state and region behind Southlake Carroll. For Flower Mound, it means debuting at No. 11 in Texas-North this week.
