Martinez, Kutey take HS PotW honors
Javier Martinez, a forward from Clark High School (San Antonio, Texas), and Jamie Kutey, a forward from St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Overland Park, Kansas), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
Texas officially marched into the postseason last weekend, the last winter-playing state to do so. Many of the state’s eyes turned toward San Antonio Clark, which is chasing the rarified air of an undefeated run to a state title. Javier Martinez kept that chase alive and well last week with a three goal performance in a smashing 4-0 victory over Corpus Christi Carrol in the Class 6A bidistrict playoffs. That not only continued Martinez’s torrid individual run this season, but it also pushed Clark to the precipice of history. At 21-0-0, that ties the San Antonio area mark for the best start to a season in history. A win over Reagan in the second round will shatter it.
As far as Kansas is concerned, dynasties don’t come much more ironclad than St. Thomas Aquinas’ over the past half decade. The Saints became the first girls program in state history to win five consecutive state titles last year when Jamie Kutey hit an overtime winner to down Blue Valley Southwest. As a senior, Kutey is off to a similarly sizzling start to her final spring campaign. The Marquette pledge was involved in every goal in Aquinas’ 5-0 win over Gardner-Edgerton last week. The No. 9 scored the first three goals, drew a penalty to set up the fourth and assisted on the fifth.
Other boys finalists include Behnam Alinejad (Ravenwood High School, Brentwood, Tennessee) and Brandon Pike (Centennial High School, Frisco, Texas). Other girls finalists include Renny Moore (Westlake High School, Austin, Texas) and Tess Rellihan (St. Theresa’s Academy, Kansas City, Missouri).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing their submission to Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school, position, grade year and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
